Comber travelled to Shorts FC on Saturday for their second league fixture. Comber went into the game with confidence on the back of their 8 – 0 win the previous week and looked to stick to the good passing football which served them well in their first game. It was tougher opposition this week for Comber but each player stuck to the game plan to ensure maximum points were taken.
Captain Bradley Porter gave Comber a deserved lead early in the first half with a stunning long range effort. Combers 2nd goal was very pleasing for the management as it came from a corner, something the team have worked on a lot in recent weeks and it certainly paid off as Lex Walker made the score 2 -0 with a great headed goal. Shorts pulled a goal back almost immediately though with a lobbed shot from the forward. 2 – 1 the score. Comber added a 3rd before half time to double their lead as George McBride surged through the defence showing good speed and strength, before slotting the ball neatly passed the on rushing Shorts keeper. Comber continued their good football for the remainder of the half and went into the break with a well deserved 2 goal lead.
HALF TIME 3 – 1 COMBER
The lads were praised at half time for their efforts and told to keep it going and they would kill the game off. Again Comber started strongly and were seeing a lot of joy down both wings. Left back Ryan McCittrick in particular was at the heart of the majority of Combers attacking moves, linking up extremely well with Thomas Connolly in left midfield. Combers back line were getting tested a little more in the second half but each player in the back 4 showed great desire to break down the Shorts attack.
Comber made it 4 – 1 mid-way through the half as Ellis Hanna found the net with a powerful strike. A shorts o.g later in the game gave Comber a 5th goal and any hope of a come back fort the home team was out the window. Substitute Jamie Cree was close to adding a 6th for Comber but was unfortunate to see his low drive smack the post.
Full time – Comber 5 Shorts 1. 2 wins in 2 for Comber, a very positive start to the new season and some excellent football on display at times. Well done to the whole squad who have worked hard in training and made sure to carryout what has been practiced on match day.
Man of The Match this week goes to Ryan McCittrick. Ryan looked a danger the whole game for Comber surging forward to assist in attacking moves whilst remembering his defensive duties aswell. Solid performance.
