Saturday saw the beginning of Combers new league campaign, as they faced Scrabo Colts, looking to start life in the new league off with 3 points. 3 points is exactly what Comber came away with, George McBride put Comber ahead early in the first half and from then the win was never in any doubt. Comber netted 8 times during the 70 minutes, George McBride with a fine hat-trick, Elliot Wilson with 2, Ellis Hannah 1, Lex Walker 1 and Jamie Cree with 1.
Due to a mix up on the way to the ground Scrabo arrived later than the scheduled kick off time, however this gave the Comber management a good opportunity to run through some tactics and work on some set plays and passing moves. This extra preparation came in very useful during the game as each player seemed to take on board the instructions. The quick passing style play from Comber was a joy to watch from the sidelines and it was pleasing to see the desire among the players to keep sticking to the game plan and working hard all over the pitch even as the goals tallied up. Thomas Beattie had a very quiet morning and was rarely called into action but a clean sheet is welcome in any game and showed the back line kept their shape and discipline even in very a one sided encounter.
Special mention goes to 3 players making their league debut for Comber Rec under 15s; Ben Conacher had a fine game at right back, while both Matthew Foster and Jamie Cree got a good run out up front with Jamie taking his goal very well.
Was difficult to single one player out for the Man of The Match award on Saturday following such a good team performance but for his excellent hat-trick George McBride wins it this week.
Well done to all the boys who put on a fine display. The management hope this style of play continues as well as the good attitude shown from each player.
