East Antrim Youth League
South City 3 - 2
Comber Rec
Greenisland
24 November 2007
For the second league encounter of the season against South City the Rec lads knew it would take a top performance to overturn an earlier 7-1 defeat. Within ten minutes and somewhat against the run of play South City took the lead when a hopeful clearance up field sent their lightening fast forward in to score. The Comber boys continued to apply pressure and got the deserved breakthrough when Alex Malcolm-Bourne picked up a cross from Ryan Irwin, wrong footing the bemused South City defender before coolly slotting home. Approaching half-time a splendid move involving Connor Pinons and Stuart Hanna and finished by Ryan Irwin produced one of the goals of the season.
Going into the second-half full of confidence the Rec should have increased their lead on a number of occasions but their failure in front of goal was to prove costly as South City started to chase the equalizer. Andrew Topping in the Comber goals would frustrate their forwards with some tremendous stops; however, he could do nothing as South City drew level with only ten minutes to play. The match was now perfectly balanced and was end to end with both teams having good opportunities’ to win. The match was finally decided in South Cities favour two minutes from time. A top class strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner of the net. No points for Comber but a lot to take from the game, every player contributing to one of best performances of the season.
