Comber 3 : 0 Larne Youth

Saturday 27th October 2007
Two goals from Nathan Clifford and a screamer
from James McVicker were enough to see off the
spirited challenge from a Larne Youth sided
which started the match with only one loss this
season. This was a game in which Comber dominated
from start to finish. Chance after chance fell
to the home side but for a long time due to
a mixture of bad luck, poor finishing and an
excellent display from the Larne keeper it looked
like the game may end level. Indeed such was
the dominance of the home side that Hackett
in the Comber goal found himself with only one
real shot to save in the whole game.
As the first half progressed Comber playing
excellent passing football pressed further and
further for the first goal but without any success.
As they committed more and more men to the effort
it was important that the defence concentrated
to ensure that Larne didn’t get the breakaway
goal. On the few occasions when they threatened
the home defence and Walker in particular were
alive to the danger.
No goals at half time. The Comber team were
told to keep going and the goal would come however
half way into the second half and with still
no goal it was beginning to look like one of
those days. Then just as hope was beginning
to fade Wilson rounded his man for the umpteenth
time and played a dangerous ball hard and low
across the Larne six yard box. On this occasion
however Clifford managed to time his run perfectly
to slide in at the back post and steer the ball
home from a couple of yards out. One nil up
and suddenly Larne wobbled and Comber took full
advantage adding a further two goals within
the next 5 minutes. The first saw McVicker,
who had another excellent game, chip the keeper
from the edge of the box. The ball struck the
underside of the bar and bounced down onto the
goal line where ace poacher Clifford was on
hand to force it over the line. McVicker got
his reward a few minutes later when, as a corner
was cleared by a Larne defender to the edge
of the area, he met the ball first time and
blasted it into the roof the net.
All in all an excellent performance by the Comber
boys which keeps them in touch with the teams
at the top of the league
