If ever there was a game which could rightly be declared as a game of two halves this was it! Comber were three up at half time and seemingly coasting to victory however in boys football the advantage of a strong wind can, and often does, have a major influence on a game. On this occasion that was certainly the case.
Both teams showing a few changes from the league match two nights previous went at it from the off with Comber better prepared it seemed for the physical battle which lay ahead. Both teams had chances before Comber took the lead from a wind assisted Hanna free kick which rocketed into the roof of the net. The next goal was the pick of the Comber three and maybe of the match. After a neat exchange of passes the ball was worked out to Wilson on the right wing who rounded his marker and played a super cross right into the path of Couter who sided footed into the Carrick net. The first half scoring was completed with Hanna’s second of the game, this time beating the keeper at his near post.
At half time the Comber coaches were well aware it was still game on and certainly made the boys aware of their views. It must also be said that the boys seemed to understand this and came out for the second half prepared to battle. Carrick, with speed throughout the side were particularly dangerous although Comber coped well until the 12th minute when the referee somehow failed to spot a foul on McVicker and play continued ultimately resulting in the first Carrick goal. Once the second goal for Carrick went in with around 18 minutes left it looked like Comber were in bother. This was the case and within a few minutes Carrick had equalised and gone into the lead. Once behind Comber never looked like getting back into the game and lost a further goal with a few minutes to go.
Again this was a good display although a very disappointing result for those involved particularly given the promise of the first half.
