East Antrim Youth League Comber Rec 3 : 1 Carnmoney Colts
Park Way - Council Pitch
Saturday 16th February 2008
After last week’s narrow home defeat
by Barn which effectively ended any slim chance
that the Comber side had of winning the title,
the Comber management made a number of notable
changes to the regular eleven. These changes
were not a reflection of the performance of
any player but rather an attempt to give some
of the younger players a chance to bed in prior
to next season. This therefore explained the
starting line up which included seven players
able to turn out for the under 13s next season.
If anything during the first 10 minutes of
the game Carnmoney saw more of the ball without
making any clear chances. This was not unexpected
given the changes in the Comber line up and
the fact that Carnmoney are a reasonable side
who going into the game had lost only twice
more than Comber this season, with one of these
defeats the first meeting with Comber. It was
somewhat against the run of play therefore when
Hanna battled his way through the backline to
put the home side one in front. This seemed
to give Comber belief and for the next 20 minutes
they applied increasing pressure before, after
a few good saves by the Carnmoney keeper and
watching one rebound off the post, Halliday
poked the ball into the net to make it 2.0.
Further changes at half time saw Johnston, who
had a good first outing in midfield and Halliday
replaced by Coulter and Johnston. Carnmoney,
not to be outdone, pushed Comber back and had
a number of good chances at least three of which
were excellently and on occasion bravely saved
by Rossbothanm in the Comber goal. Comber’s
third goal relieved the pressure when a long
shot by Mcvicker flew past the Carnmoney keeper
and into the roof of the net. This effectively
put the match out of reach however Carnmoney
scored a goal which, it could not be denied
they deserved, in the last minutes to give a
final score of three goals to one
